The tradition of jokes on April 1st seems to have origins around 1500 in France, when peolple use to celebrate the arrival of the New Year between March 25th and April 1st. This last day was the one dedicated to banquets, toasts and gift exchanges. With the advent of the Gregorian calendar, New Year’s Eve was moved to January 1st, but the news was not immediately received by all: due to ignorance or love of tradition, those who kept to celebrate on April 1st were all pointed out as fools of April (in English, in fact, this recurrence is
called April Fool’s Day).
